How many residents currently in program?
The program admits 3-5 PGY-2 residents each year. We currently have 9 residents total.

What are the Electives for Medical Students?
Medical Students may spend a one month elective in Preventive Medicine if approved by the program. Please contact the program director for application details.
Do all residents have to spend two years in the program, even if they already have an MPH?
Yes, the UCSD/SDSU GPMR is a two year residency irrespective of prior PH coursework.
Do all residents have to chose a ‘track’?
While we strongly encourage residents to choose an area of concentration, some residents prefer a broader exposure to preventive medicine, such as general clinical preventive medicine. The outservice military residents generally are not in a ‘track’.
Are there elective rotation options during the residency?
Yes; though we are not an occupational medicine program, some residents rotate in occupational medicine facilities. We are affiliated with the Toxicology Fellowship at UCSD, another option for electives. Residents in one "track" may rotate in another track as an elective.

Program Description
The UCSD-SDSU General Preventive Medicine is a fully accredited residency, co-sponsored by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine (UCSD), Department of Community and Preventive Medicine and the San Diego State University, Graduate School of Public Health (SDSU). Residents of the program are both UCSD housestaff and SDSU graduate students throughout their residency experience.
Preventive Medicine is a specialized field of medical practice composed of distinct disciplines which utilize skills focusing on defined populations in order to maintain health and well-being and prevent disease, disability and premature death. Preventive Medicine is comprised of four specialty areas as follows:
General Preventive Medicine is the sub-specialty of Preventive Medicine emphasized in our program. We offer accredited training in two of three "years" required for board eligibility - the "academic year" and the "practicum year". Therefore, applicants must have completed, by time of entry, at least one full-year of acceptable clinical training (internship).
It is important to note that a Masters of Public Health or the equivalent is required for board certification in this specialty.

Requirements
The residency is accredited for both the academic and practicum years. The residents complete these years concurrently over two-years.
All residents must complete the following requirements:
Academic Year includes MPH in one of the following areas of concentrations:
48-56 units are required with many residents completing 55-60 units. The Graduate School of Public Health also requires a thesis comprehensive examination or extensive literature review.
All Preventive Medicine residents are required to complete a Masters in Public Health (MPH).
Those residents who already have an MPH before entering the program must still enroll in the School of Public Health, and complete a full PGY2 and PGY3 year.
