Research
This project is usually done in the area of concentration of the MPH and may serve as the thesis requirement as well.  Goals and objectives for this part of the residency include obtaining competency in needs assessments, program design and implementation, and evaluation.

Track Rotations:
Each resident chooses a "track" or area of concentration for the two years of the program.  These tracks are in three general areas:  clinical preventive medicine, research, and public health.

The clinical preventive medicine track is done within settings servicing specific populations: college and university students, medically indigent populations, and others as appropriate, and concentrates on the development of grantsmanship, epidemiology, and research.

The research track includes our cancer prevention and research curriculum.  The public health track is conducted in the Department of Health Services in the County of San Diego.

Didactic Seminar Series
Residents are required to attend weekly four-hour didactic seminars in General Preventive Medicine. Topics are based on the competencies identified by the American College of Preventive Medicine Competency Project.  The didactic seminars require active resident participation, including interfacing with guest speakers, presenting at Journal Club and Board preparation.

Public Health Rotation
All residents complete a minimum of one full month in the San Diego County Public Health Department.  This includes a one-week introduction at the San Diego County Department of Public Health as well as an in-depth experience on a specific project.

Community Experience in General Preventive Medicine
The community rotations are conducted for at least one month during the two years of the residency. Competencies acquired in this rotation include treating underserved medical populations, clinical preventive medicine; administration, program planning, budgeting and applied research.
